Jon,
It doesn't sound like your heater is doing its job.
With the heater working, the motor should run
smooth. I've had instances where the heater
wasn't igniting and really richened up the fuel mix
and made it harder to start. I found this out
after the engine did finally start and was running
rough. I switched on the heater and made things
worse. When the heater is working right, I've
never had to make ten attempts, usually one.
