Scott,
I'm willing to take a shot at it.
I think that the 643F might stand for the 643rd Field Artillery Battalion
and the C2 would be "C" Battery, trailer number 2.
147-F-3 might be 147th Field Artillery Battalion, 3rd Brigade and SV-2
probably refers to Service Battery, trailer number 2.
In 20+ years in the Army, I have seen a tremendous variety of bumper
markings. Sometimes they are fairly easy to decode, and sometimes they are
really tough. I'm sure that there is supposed to be a method that is to be
followed in marking vehicles, but I can't say that I have ever seen a copy
of it. I wonder if anybody on the List might have an official military
publication that details all of the possible bumper number combinations? I
know that, when I was in a unit that was being reorganized, we were directed
by a higher Headquarters to repaint the bumper identification on our
vehicles. We assumed that they were right in telling us to do this, but I
wonder where they got their information.
John

Subject: [MV] More markings query
Hello.
I acquired an M100 trailer last year, serial 13509, no date stamped, Dunbar
Kapple, Inc. Geneva Ill.
The markings on the trailer are very clear to see with the naked eye.
The registration number is 01294104.
It is marked on rear crossmember:
643F C-2
And one time it was repainted, and relettered it was marked:
147-F-3 SV-2
Can anyone out there in this great land help me on these unit markings?
Previous owner thought it came from Colorado, but not sure.
Thanks,
Scott Janz
