Gimmik was too harsh a word but I was actually talking about the power
steering. My e-mail was a little confusing. I can see cases where power
steering would be a great help to someone but I still think it's over priced
for most people. I would rather have two deuces than one with power steering.
The power steering lists at around $1900USD. I know you can get it cheaper
than that but you can also get a deuce cheaper than that at the DRMO.
As far as the lock-out hubs, Steve has the best idea. There was an older
gentelman that I used to see at aberdeen every year. He drove a '50s REO M35
(gas). I believe he'd even driven it cross country. He had made up some dummy
front axel flanges wilth a roller bearing mounted in them to carry the end of
the axel shaft. He said he would also remove the drive shaft between the rear
axels on long trips. You could also replace the rear shafts with a pair of
front flanges so none of the rear diff is turning. If I tow a deuce a long
distance I do this on all the rear axles to reduce drag. For the front, I
made up some wood covers to replace the front flanges. I know free wheeling
the front will help fuel economy and driveability but most deuces I've delt
with are already getting 10 to 12 mpg empty on the highway.
You can update a sprag to air shift by changing the front housing assy.
