Hi list,
I would think that one think to be aware of with
removing axle shafts on the rears would be lube of the
wheel bearings. As I understand, as the gears turn in
the housing then "pump" by rotation gear oil up and
into the hollow axle housing which then runs out to
the wheel bearing a little at a time. This also takes
place when the truck "leans" on a hill. If the oil
were kept at full to the sight plug then this would
not be as much of a threat. But these old rears leak
at times and lube of the wheel bearings is very
important at road speed in order to keep them cool.
My .02. Rick
