GrayLady52,
Last night I picked up my recent issue of Military Vehicle Magazine and
started to
look through it to find a 715 parts dealer, but after flipping a few pages I
decided
to rely on the List and I'm glad I did. I sure appreciate your sending me the
links.
I found the cap listed in the Surplus City site and I'll call them.
My helper and I went nuts finding the problem. He told me all he did was pull
one
wire at a time, three of them, then the engine quit. We tried new wires, coil
and
spark plugs, cleaned the points and gave it a shot of ether, but couldn't get
it started.
So, then I pulled a wire from the cap and then I saw the spark travel up the
insulation
and ground on the metal housing. I made a tool to clean each port in the cap,
then
it started, but still has an intermittent miss in one cylinder. While I had
the cap out
of the housing I took a real close look at it. There were paths from #1 to #4
where
it was shorting. This was the original problem, we just made things worse. I
emery
clothed the paths, but I'm pretty sure it's still arcing. By pulling one wire
at a time,
for some reason the spark could travel all the way up the insulation and
created a
path on the three receptacles we pulled the wires out of. Once the path is
created,
a short is almost guaranteed.
I'm sending my response to you to the List so M715 owners will learn from
my mistakes. This problem probably would apply to other M-Series distributors.
Again, thanks very much,
Joe Young
