The LV number system was part of the great post war repackaging excercise- I
recall talk of it being a scandal with vast sums of money being paid to the
companies that did the re packing of perfectly adequately packged (mainly US
but other allied manufatured) parts and the subsequent re-numbering which
no-one ever understood.
It was apparently suspected that German POW's working at Chilwell may have
developed the new numbering system with typical tuetonic administrative
efficiency to handicap any British defence in the possibility of a further
conflict with Germany........
The booklet that gives the details of the LV numbering system is called
I think HOAS - Handbook Of Army Stores or something very similar. I have a
copy somewhere but cant find it right now.
Hours of fun, NIGE
