Our collapsible canvas water buckets were issued with the vehicle as part of
normal kit, and stowed in bins with other such kit (depending on the vehicle
type), or otherwise anywhere a corner could be found. You're right -- I wouldn't
hang MINE from a gas can, either... never mind the gas, what about effects of
sun on canvas over time? And road filth?
If you get one, stow it wherever space permits, but bring it out (and fill it
up!) for static displays. Not EVERYTHING has to be hanging off every corner of
your jeep, all the time. That's taking it to extremes...
Both the Commonwealth (usually Canadian) and U.S. WW2 buckets come up on Ebay
several times a year, and the average selling price is between $20 and $25 USD.
