I think 99% of this is the perception of the law enforcement officer. The
Tennessee drivers handbook states "in general, a commercial vehicle is any
vehicle with a GVWR of 26000 lbs or more...", no mention of historic plates
is in this part of the manual. Again, I say this is the Tennessee drivers
manual, which is not the same as the law.
Practically speaking, I have never been questioned about the type of license
I had when driving a HMV, even when involved in an accident. My equipment is
well maintained, is presented 100% military (no civy mods, markings, etc) and
is not used as a daily driver or for any commercial service. Antique plates.
No problems at all.
HOWEVER, I suspect that if I were to use them for commercial purposes
(hauling rock, logs, etc) the reception would be much different.
Attitude, both drivers and officers (and judges) is what I believe is the
most relevant factor here.
