There was the (in)famous WW2 British truck supposed problem when they went
from 3 gasolines to two; av-gas and other. The other was a lot highe that
the brits engines could stand and took out valves and engines.
Yes, buy the "GMC The Universal Truck" book. It is french leaning, but has
very good info along with some mistakes. They make a version in English.
The 1st cckw's, the CCKWX-353 (14,000 produced) would run on 68 octane.
Yes, Yellow Truck and Bus manufactured GMC trucks under the GMC name. GMC
took over the Buick 6 cylinder engine line in the 30's and revised them
somewhat to suit their needs. If you look at a Buick straight 8 cylinder
head and a cckw head you will notice that the valve train appears identical
and that the head has the same unusual boss on the front in the same place.
