M35 losing water. No evidence. How come?

My M35A2 turbo with LD-465-1C Continental is drinking water. Had to put
about a gallon back in after 20 miles or so. Cap looks good. No evidence
of leaks. Stack exhaust gasses look perfectly clear. Runs really great.
Starts easy. Great gas mileage, too. In over 50 miles, gas gauge went
down about the width of the needle. Visual inspection of the tank showed
small decrease in fuel level. Beats me! Ears still ringing, however. Ok,
so it says "ear protection required" on the dash.... :-)
Is there a typical problem that would lead to this loss of water? I
don't smell any coolant at all. Temp gauge indicates 218 degrees, but
you can put your hand on the radiator while it is running at temp.
Feels more like 160. Suspect temp gauge not right. Ideas? Thanks. Jim
