That's an interesting thought. The water pump has only done a few miles
as it went in not long ago. I did check the thrust washer at the time
and there was no discernable play (NOS water pump). So chances are
the pump is not the cause. But I find your suggestion very plausible.
If all else fails I will pull the pump and check that the thrust washer
hasn't done anything weird.
