Howdy List;
All three of the scenarios can cause a runaway. Lack of fuel control from
the injection pump, bypassing of crankcase oil and external fuel sources.
the important point is the only sure way to shut down a runaway diesel
engine is deprive it of air. This is how emergency shut offs function on
large commercial diesels, by blocking off the intake, usually with a thick
metal plate. If you are going to start a diesel that is an unknown, be sure
you have thought of how you are going to block the intake of air if need be.
By the way, a fire extinguisher can shut down an engine in an emergency, but
what a mess, unless you use a Halon(sp?) type. Hope this helps! (remind me
to tell you about a Detriot 6-110 in our shop that found out how to suck gas
out of a nearby gas can one day, what a mess!)
