Ted is right,

Halon (bromochlorodifluoromethane (1211) or bromotrifluoromethane (1301))
alone is not toxic (maybe not good for you though) but like many other CFC's
(such as refrigerant gases) it does undergo a chemical reaction when heated
to high temperatures and forms a toxic gas.

Halon 1211 is available in 2 to 12 lb bottles while Halon 1301 is available
only in the 2.5 lb portable extinguishers.

Sorry Jim, but Halon is a CFC. In order to use it for fire extinguishers
you must apply for an exemption. This is why the Air Force
doesn't want to see it phased out. Nothing works quite like it for
extinguishing those nasty engine fires.

The reason you can't survive in a room where Halon has been dumped is that
it is heavier than air so you rapidly can't breathe.
