Hi List;
Thanks for the corrections from Jay, Ted, and Jon. The subject of Halon
has a lot more depth than meets the eye. At work, we
could have gotten a Halon system for our solvent storage room but opted for
a dry chemical system instead. The Halon was a recycled product that was
CFC free but recharge would have cost $5K a pop (about every 2 years). The
asphyxiation hazard was also a lot less with the Energen system according
to risk management at the university health and safety department. None of
this stuff, it seems, is free from problems. There used to be a dry
chemical extinguisher that the military used called PURPLE K. That stuff
would put out the fire and leave the equipment a real mess. Personally, I
like the CO2 in the truck, even if it is only a B and C type extinguisher.
Thanks for the info,
Jim
