I go out of my way to buy garden tools from Ames Shovel Co. (tru-
temper). They've been around since before the Revolution. They
were outlawed by the British 'cause the figured out how to temper
thin steel shovel blades for strength and lightness. The British would
allow no manufacturing here (colonies could only supply raw
materials to England, then purchase back the finished goods).Only
wooden shovels could be made here. Ames refused to comply so
were outlawed by the redcoats. Of course this and other issues
were later resolved at Yorktown.
