The main reason is not cost, but suitablilty of material. Cast Iron is
rigid, self-lubricating and vibration dampening; plus it lends itself
well to easily casting into intricate shapes. A forging would be out of
the question due to the complexity of a motor block. One of the minor
manufacturers tried a furnace brazed steel block assembled from tubing
and stampings in the late '40's, but it was not successful.
