my maternal Grandmother's brother
Frank Karkosak, SGT, Medic, 83rd Infantry Division, awarded Bronze Star when
he ran into a field under fire to rescue some wounded friends. Stole a jeep
from 4th Armored Division (obligatory MV Content). Passed 1996. My
favorite Uncle married to my Grandmother's sister Elizabeth. I didn't know
he was a medic until last year.
COL Robert F. Miller, INF, Commander Co F 175th Infantry from 1942 to St Lo,
July 1944. Battalion Commander 2/27th INF of 25th ID during Korean War.
Good friend and mentor. He never failed to mention "my men" of Co F
whenever we talked. In his last public speaking appearance with military
men, one of his pieces of advise was to always keep a few jeeps around, and
make sure they had stretchers in them. Strangely, he also made sure I knew
how to do an emergency tracheotomy, because he felt it was very important to
know. He talked about it several times, and I always thought it odd. He
passed while I was in Paramedic School in May 1993.
