The other trick is to drape one or more old, thick blankets over the cable,
if it parts the blanket acts like an air brake and minimises the whiplash
effect. Bystanders should be the length of cable away in all directions.

I vividly recall as a young lad a small ship cable (hawser really) parting
after they had paid out something like 100yds and were using it as a pivot
to turn the ship 180 deg against a fast tide. The two trees neatly lopped
off by 80 yds of singing hawser dissipated most of the energy and saved the
small gathered crowd on the quayside from mass impromptu amputations.
