Folks,
Lately the list has gotten kind of passionate about
certain threads and carried on ad nauseum. I would
like to post a small something that exemplifies what
we all gain from this list and hobby.
Over nine weeks ago I answered a for sale ad that a
gentleman had place on Steelsoldiers.com about some
M211's he had. Now I have a terminal case of GMC'itis
and have been a terrible offender where it comes to
tire kicking and I am grateful for the tolerance of
many, Joe Young (MVTrucker) especially. But for once
I was able to make everything fall into place and
yesterday I pulled into the yard with my latest toys,
2 more M211's (for a total of 3) and a bus that we
will refer to as "Tug"
I have learned much from the list and all the threads
on towing. I have also met some great folks and
through the help and reference of Kerry Bernstein I
was able to secure the use of a 5 ton tow bar (do not
lift alone more than once!) Kerry referred me to a
gentleman in the Green Mtn MV Club who lent me his tow
bar for nothing based solely on Kerry's recommendation
and pure kindness in helping another MV owner. I made
real sure that I took it back clean and with the
donation of a couple pins he was short. I would have
gladly paid for the use of the bar and so offered only
to be told that he was just glad to be able to help
out another MV'er.
As for the safety and procedural end of things- I had
four other helpers. One in a lead vehicle, one
driving the good deuce, and two in the chase vehicle.
We had enough tools and emergency supplies to outfit a
small truck stop: chains, oil, anti-freeze, brake
fluid, compressed air and fittings to make more from
the truck, blocks, jacks, come-a-alongs, and more
including a brand new roll of duct tape just for the
occasion.
But we never had to use any of it. I had recon'd the
route (about 100 miles) planning for as much flat low
traffic area as possible, we had a good plan, we had a
good formation on the rode that allowed us to watch
each other, and we did not have any major problems at
all.
It was a very happy day i both that I got my new toys,
but also that I spent the day with some great friends,
new and old. 2 of these guys came straight from
working 12 hour night shifts to help me out. You
would be hard pressed to find a better group of
friends to spend the day playing with green stuff
with.
It is days like this and friends like these that make
us form clubs and go to shows and seek out others who
are similarly afflicted. Thank you all for the help,
advise, lessons, and fellowship that make this a most
enjoyable vice.
