I guess it is possible that the previous owner put the wrong master cylinder
on it. I will have to go take a look.
I am certain that the booster that I put on there is not an M35 pack. I
compared it with my spare out of curiosity. They are similar but it would
be impossible to accidentally substitute one for the other.

You probably have wrongly installed a M35 master cylinder or air/hydraulic
cylinder on you GMC...this can lead to these type symptoms.
