Results of How to remove undercoating?

Seems like there is no easy way to remove undercoating. It's a messy job.
The general consensus was:
1. Soften with heat.
2. Scrape off as much as possible with a putty knife.
3. Remove residue with a petroleum product.
Thanks to everyone that sent me their suggestions.
