If you have ever driven a M8 or M20 you'd know why. There are a pain to
operate and will wear you out quickly. The other guy was the co-driver to
let the driver rest. He also handle the radio which on the M20 was right
behind him and to the right. Hope thhis helps

Subject: [MV] M-8 Greyhound question
My son is putting together a model of the M-8 Greyhound scout car and
wondered what the function of one of the two front seats is. It will
carry someone, but oddly enough, it has no machine gun or radio. Hence,
the person in that seat has no job that we can detect. We must be
missing something, here. Experts? Jim
