I missed your original posting, so this may be of no help...
There is a switch that is on the top of the M37 starter that can suffer from
carbon build up and cause the truck not to start.
The switch can be opened up and cleaned without pulling the starter, but I do
not recall if the switch can be completely removed without pulling the
starter.
