We've been cycling a few of our HMMWV's through a local diesel specialty
shop to have the injector pump timing checked. Every one so far has been
out of whack, and one of 'em was so far out that it couldn't even be timed
because some mil-mechanic or contractor put the pump in a tooth or two out.
One of the humvees which used to have a horrible habit of belching smoke
(which I thought was overfueling) cleared up considerably after the pump was
timed properly, so it could very well be yours should be checked as well.

I'm tempted to recommend the company spend a few bucks on one of the dynamic
timing rigs the diesel shop uses (it's CAN65.00 just to have them hook the
thing up for diagnosis!), but I understand they're a rather pricey addition
to have hanging around on the wall until needed.
