In my opinion, using the center tap to derive 12 volts is not a problem
assuming that the current draw is minimal, for instance, the standby power
requirement for a two-way radio in receive mode. Considering the short length
of time that the radio is transmitting versus its receive time, the batteries
would equalize quickly. It is the situation where a large constant load is
put on only one battery that would be troublesome.

There are several commercially-available 24 to 12 converters out there. The
alternative is a second small 12 volt alternator, with its own 12 volt
battery. Any of the GM ones could be easily installed, the benefit of that
brand being the internal regulator. One big wire to the + side of the battery
and one small exciter lead, thru a 12 volt idiot light to the 12 volt + side
of the battery. Lots of old farm tractors use this method to replace the
original 6 volt generator system. apb
