Sorry, I should have been more clear about the type wheel I was talking
about.
These were the centerless rims, that go on the spoked type hub. The rim
itself is held in place with a 'wedge' over the wheel stud, and the nut is
tightened down against the 'wedge', clamping the rim to the center hub. We
called them 'Dayton' style rims.
You are supposed to loosen the nuts, back them off some without removing
them from the studs, and then 'tap' the wedges releasing the the pressure.
And they can really let loose, if that lug nut is removed!
You don't have that type problem with the 'Budd' style of military rims.
And you don't have the alignment problems either.
