I would say that if it was running and you want that truck, $1000 is a pretty
good deal. Obviously you could spend a lot more than that trying to get a
proper wrecker bed back on it.

I'd tell the guy that you would be willing to pay him $1000 if both of you can
get it running decently on his lot. That way you can make sure the engine isn't
trashed and have a much better idea of whether or not the project is viable.
All you need operation is the spark, and the starter. You can put gas down the
carb to get it going and check to make sure there is no major mechanical noises
coming out of the engine.
