Just bought a brand new 6v battery for my MB.
Starts the engine easily, lights ok, everything ok.
Later noticed some 'water' on the top of the battery. Thought nothing of it
because it had recently rained on the Jeep a bit.
Then noticed that when the engine was running, the ammeter showed a big
discharge.
Stopped the engine and turned the lights on - ammeter show a big charge.
Dipped finger in the 'water; and tasted it - yeuk - acid !
Put a voltmeter on the battery - Polarity is reversed !!
Battery must have boiled up and it had squirted acid out all over itself and
smart new paint :-(
Embarrassed supplier is coming 20 miles to my home to bring a new battery on
Tuesday. (He did say that if I completely flattened the battery with a bulb
and then charged it up as normal, it would be ok, but he preferred to do the
swap)
Wonder how it managed to start the engine ?
If the starter turned the wrong way and the engine fired, maybe it threw out
the bendix pinion and started running the right way ?
Can't think of any other way it would work.
