I assume the vehicle is pre 1960's from the fact that it uses a 6 volt system.
(Sorry for the ignorance) In vehicles without electronics, battery polarity
really does not matter that much. Here's why:
Starter Motor: If the polarity is reversed, the polarities of both the armature
and field are reversed. Since BOTH are reversed, the motor still turns the same
way. >> NP
Generator: (NOT alternator.... they have electronics in the rectifier diodes)
It's the same story. The field polarity is reversed, so the output voltage is
reversed. In fact, generators have to be "polarized" when new or rebuilt because
they will not put out anything if the field is not connected except from
residual magnetism. A voltage regulator made up of only relays would likely also
work right, as long as there are no polarizing magnets in it.
Ignition: An ignition system with only points and a coil should work OK. The
polarity of the spark will be reversed, and the performance might degrade due to
the asymmetric design of spark plugs.
Lights: No difference. The old flashers were thermal and would not be impacted.
Horn: No difference.
Radios: Likely will not work, although tube types would probably not be
damaged.
In retrospect, I am somewhat puzzled why the battery should have been reverse
charging the battery. Do you have an alternator, raher than a generator on it?
