It sounds like the previous owner used hypoy/EP90 oil in the
transmission/transfer...hence the "metal"found in the oil....(that's your
bearings !!)

And if you re-filled it with hypoy/EP90 gear oil, you can expect even more
whine and even more metal in the oil.
This stuff is FATAL for mutt transmissions......absolutely don't use
it....and if anyone else thinks they may have used it, or isn't quite
sure.......drain it now and re-fill with a straight 90 grade mineral oil.
