A few months ago my '84 CUCV 6.2 developed a starter grinding problem.
Started off occasionally happening and within two months, occurred almost
daily. I had my local auto starter/gen. shop check out the starter. He pulled
it and inspected it. The nose gear was not damaged. No problems found on the
starter but he told me the ring gear had 4 bad spots on it.
I bought a new ring gear and followed Gene's advice (posted a while back) on
CUCV Diesel ring gear replacement without removing the trans & transfer
completely and it worked like a charm. I didn't even have to remove the drive
shaft. Now, a month after replacing the ring gear the starter is grinding
again. Yes, the front mount is on the starter. No shims were installed.
Has anyone else been through this problem? Any suggestions appreciated.
