Weasel Fuel Tank

Hello List,

I've started restoring my Weasel, and would like to get some advice from the
list. I've been posting on the Weasel Restoration site as well so forgive
me if this is a bit redundant, just trying to get as many opinions as
possible. The Weasel apparently came with 3 different kinds of fuel tanks
that were introduced over the production run. The first two tanks were
steel and the third was rubber self sealing. Although my vehicle is an
early one SN 2003 it had a rubber tank installed which apparently is common,
as the older tanks were replaced with the current version. Well upon
removing the tank I found quite a mess. The outside of the tank is in great
condition. The inside is the problem. The top near the filler neck and
sending unit holes is very intact black rubber with a firm sponginess. but
as you go down the side walls and the front slope, the rubber looks like it
has melted almost looks like a lava flow. Where this has happenend you can
see strings which must come from the fabric strengthening inside the rubber
much like a tire I guess.... the bottom of the tank is gooey where globs
from the side and twisted string reside... the substance is amber in color
and very sticky almost like rubber cement... my guess is this is a
combination of jellied gasoline mixed with rubber.... I guess I have two
options. I can try to find a new tank or I can try to repair this one. I
could go either way on steel or rubber. Does anybody have any replacement
Weasel tanks? Or how on earth could I repair this rubber tank. I was
thinking about cleaning it out and perhaps using a very thick sealer maybe
1/4 inch deep and producing a "shell" inside my old tank? I don't even know
if that is possible... are there any products you could pour in let dry to
produce a thick coat, turn sideways pour in the side wall, let dry, etc...
??? I don't even know if that would be viable.... please any ideas?

Thanks,
Tony
