Just plain grease was also commonly used in Model T differentials, as well
as in other gear boxes. Steering gear, being slow speed and low load,
would sound to me like a good candidate for grease. When I rebuilt the
steering box in my jeep, I used grease and didn't even consider putting oil
in it.
