I am not a diesel mechanic, but the description sounds like you've got a
clogged injector or two. It's also possible the injector pump is out of
time (or both at the same time).

To add to what Ron stated, if it were a gasser, you would think something
(wire, plug, cap) was breaking down spark wise.
I have never heard an M35 sound/run like this....
