My experience is:
1: White smoke is unburned diesel fuel.
2. Blue smoke (while engine is running) is an indication of bad rings,
valve guides or a cracked piston.
3. Black smoke (while engine is running) indicates a rich fuel mixture.
Not being a diesel engine mechanic, I do not have an explanation to
your problem, but it sure sounds like a fuel supply problem exists. Get
your injector pump checked for pressure and supply. Might even be a
problem with the injectors. Try adding a quality diesel fuel conditioner.
