I'm not extremely familiar with diesels, but black smoke generally comes from
running too rich. White smoke generally comes from water getting into the
cylinders. I suspect you have a blown head gasket and coolant from the water
jacket is getting into one or more cylinders. I've never seen white smoke
from an overrich condition.
