The "grumbling" noise is most likely a bearing noise. You should have
replaced the output shaft bearings as well, as long as you had the T-case
apart (you did replace the intermediate gear thrust washers when you put in
the new bearings, right?). The adjustment of the output shaft play is
spelled out in TM-9 1803B (power train manual for the GPW/MB). You will
need a shim kit for the transfer case and must add or remove shims until
there is no more than .003" end movement of the output shaft.
Also, if you take the T-case apart again, check on the condition of the
Output Clutch Shaft Pilot Bushing (Pn.# GP 7777). This bushing is rarely
replaced when overhauling the T-case but it is a very important item.
One other thing to note........If you remove the transmission along with
the T-case be sure to inspect the input shaft bushing in the center of the
flywheel. If the bushing is worn or the hole is eccentric, be sure to
replace this. We just had a customer's MB here with a loud growl in 2nd and
3rd which was traced to a spun bearing in the front input of the
transmission case. The pilot bushing hole was worn egg shaped and allowed
the input shaft to oscillate which then spun the bearing.
