have to pull the engine or do anything special)?
YES, MAKE SURE THERE IS NO STRAIN BETWEEN TRANSMISSION AND TRANSFER.
DISCONNECT DRIVE AND PTO SHAFTS, REMOVE FLOORBOARDS (TWO PIECES), AND SHIFT
LEVER. ON EARLY MODELS REMOVE LINKAGE CONNECTING TRANSMISSION AND TRANSFER.
THE MILITARY HAS A SPECIAL HOIST THAT SITS IN THE FLOORBOARD AND LOWERS THE
TRANNY...I HAVE ONE OF THESE BUT HAVE YET TO USE IT...INSTEAD A BIG CHERRY
PICKER STUCK THROUGH THE DOOR WORKS WELL, AS DOES A TRANSMISSION JACK, OR A
HOIST HUNG FROM HEAVY BEAM SPANNING BACK OF CAB TO WINDSHIELD.
2.) If I do pull the tranny and replace it, is there
anything I should know ahead of time from those
of you with experience?
TRANSMISSION IS NOT PARTICULARLY HEAVY, BUT IS AWKWARD TO MANHANDLE, BE
CAREFUL TO NOT DROP ON YOURSELF OR OTHERS. CONSIDER REPLACING CLUTCH AND/0R
REAR ENGINE OIL SEAL WHILE THERE.
3.) Is there a better way to deal with the loud 5th
gear noise (other than sawdust or earplugs)?

DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR IDEA OF LOUD IS, I'VE NEVER REALLY HEARD A QUITE ONE.
I HAVE SEVERAL FRIENDS WHO SWEAR BY LUCAS GEAR OIL...I TRIED IT AND COULDN'T
TELL ANY DIFFERENCE MYSELF.
Hope this helps,
David Doyle
