Dear Listers....

if you check out Levin's CV, you will find that he is chairman of the House
Armed Services Committee and is also on the Intelligence Committee. He is
also anti-gun, anti-NRA (check out his speeches on gun ownership).

Strangely, he was involved in setting up an auto-industry/US Army
co-operative venture and even more surprsingly, according to press reports,
he was in favor of an automobile national heritage area:- see below.......

<<WASHINGTON The Senate today approved a bill creating an Automobile National
Heritage Area in Southeast Michigan, sending it on to the President. Rep.
John Dingell, D-Dearborn, authored the legislation (H.R.3910), which passed
the House earlier this month, and Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., who had
introduced the Senate version, fought for Senate passage of the measure.
"The growth of the automobile industry has had a tremendous impact on the
history of Southeast Michigan and the world for the past century," Levin
said. "By establishing an Automobile National Heritage Area, we can help
communities to preserve the historic contributions of the industry. I
appreciate the time and effort which Congressman Dingell has devoted to this
project, which will enable generations of Americans to appreciate a special
cornerstone of American history here in Michigan."

The legislation establishes a six-corridor Automobile National Heritage Area
in Southeast Michigan to recognize the industrial and cultural contributions
of the automotive industry. The Heritage Area will help communities conserve
their automobile-related heritage through cooperative relationships among
government and private sector groups. The legislation authorizes up to
$1,000,000 per year, subject to annual Congressional approval, to foster
partnerships with state and local governments and private organizations to
develop, preserve and enhance the corridors of the Heritage Area. >>

Now, how does his avowed interest in auto heritage square with his proposal
to demil equipment (for us, specifically, historic Military Vehicles) ?

Like Floyd Spence's bill last year, it seems that someone from the DoD has
persuaded the Bill's sponsor to include this demil clause which we all
thought was stone-dead. Obviously, it isn't...... and either Levin knows what
the implications are (and this guy is no dope), or someone at DoD is
determined to get this pushed through one way or another.

Surprisingly, when I tried to find details of contributors to Levin's
campaign funds, all the Webcrawler and AltaVista reference pages (referring
to his funds) came up as "webpage not available". Just co-incidence, I
suppose. Anyone out there have a URL which shows who this chap's contributors
are??? Just wondering..........

Ken
