Hate to break it to you ace BUT....
One of the larges mass unit losses in Desert Storm was the Pennsylvania NG
in Saudi that caught a SCUD missile. I think there were 38 KIA's in that
one.
A LOT of NG folks pulled duty in Bosnia. You know that last time we tried to
stick -up for the Muslims.
As far as safe in the NG and Reserves. Yeah, US cannot deploy more than two
divisions forward now without Reserve and NG support. The watch word for us
in those organizations is not IF you get called up but WHEN you get called
up. Respectfully Ted, you living in the Cold War era we fought that was to a
victory. But, in typical American fashion, the politicians in Washington
poked the pony and lost the peace for us, again.

Conscientious objectors were originally for the people that had moral
problems about the taking of life. That would be known at the time of
enlistment or drafting. Maybe, very occasionally, after a life-changing
event like conversion to a new religion. I'd be willing to bet that the
only thing these people object to is putting their butts on the line and the
only thing that is sacred to them is their own hide..
If they wanted to cut their chances of going to war even more, they
should have joined the National Guard. It worked for me. : )
