Re: [MV] kerosene vs. diesel

It's been over ten years since I was in the fuel business, but if I recall
correctly,
There's K-1 kero for use in Kerosun type heaters and lamps (clear as water),
#1 kero for use in pot burners (slightly yellow in color), #1 diesel
(probably #1
kero, but dyed red), # 2 diesel (also dyed red to indicate it's taxed), #2
fuel oil
(home heating oil, untaxed, greenish in color) and JP4 (basically kerosene).
In
many cases, diesel is #2 fuel oil, but dyed. True diesel has a guaranteed
cetane
(something like the octane rating in gasoline) rating. Truckers were using #2
fuel in order to avoid the 15 cents per gallon Federal tax and the state tax
(12 cents
here in NJ back then). I don't know how much tax is on the fuel today. This
is why the Feds required diesel for on road use to be dyed red. A NJ fuel
dealer, back before diesel was red and the seller would collect the taxes,
collected the taxes when they sold fuel and kept it, swindling the Fed and
state government out of a million bucks!
They got caught. Now a days the tax is paid at the pick up point, like at the
refinery. NJ put a fifteen cents per gallon tax on off road use diesel,
usually #2 heating oil. This was collected by me and sent in. NJ now makes a
fuel dealer collect a tax on fuel delivered to a non-residence, like a garage
or store.
Just tid bits for your interest.
