This message contains part of the Reply - Re: connecting my generator to
the house thread.
Have you ever worked on your lil' flathead with absolutely no heat
whatsoever in your workshop. At first my fingers and toes screamed back at
me. But, eventually it's impossible to even pick up a nut and washer
efficiently, with out dropping it under the vehicle.
Last year my wife and I completely built our new bigger Willys Workshop
ourselves, even built the roof trusses up in place, piece by piece. Our
ridge beam 32ft., is just shy of 20 feet high. The beam took my 17 yr. old
daughter - wifey and me, to raise with great difficulty. I could not
believe this was the young schoolteacher I married 20 years before.
Well now the garage is up and running . Presently, one Jeep '44 Ford GPW
frame is completed on jack stands ready for the axle rebuild and
replacement. The new shop is about 4 times the size of the old one. However,
we still have no insulation for the second year. So on days I work during
winter ...it's was last year a stinking kerosene Salimander. The fumes just
killed me !
This year we have natural gas heat. A great, great improvement. Although,
at this point I am bathed in the wonderful hot air which rises up and is
lost. through the roof.
However, next spring hopefully it will be finally insulated.
My 4.4KW generator supplied emergency power last year on two occasions. I
wrestled the problem of what would be the best way to get the Gen to the
house . Now forget the new workshop, we needed to heat the house. And heat
it in a hurry too !
So, I removed my meter to gain access - outside (where my generator needed
to operate) I did this due to an emergency . . .we were17 hours into a "no"
power ice storm.
Nobody knew when there would be power to run the water pump / toilet & the
furnace Ign. & blower.
My Power breakers were too far inside the house to be running my Gen.
inside.
In any emergency, I will think first of me and mine... then taking second
place will be any concern for the Elect. company's meter seal ! My Electric
bill also supports the fact that we are not stealing power.
For those few wealthy do gooders who have recently written to the message
boards, ...why don't you try this sometime.
Turn your heat and water off for a day ! Then you will view that little
Electric Meter Seal quite differently.
Unless, of course, you're a high paid person with a fat bank account that
can afford to rip your house apart mid winter to replace several frozen
burst pipes ...Remember, that is, all for the sanctity of preserving the
little meter seal. As for me and my family I chose heat .
Now off my soapbox which cost me 2 cents... Cheap, eh?
