> M274A2 Carrier, utility, platform
Guys,
I hate to be a nitpicker but these are not the correct
nomenclature for the mule.
The correct are as follows:
M274 - Carrier, Light Weapons, Infantry
M274A1 - Carrier, Light Weapons, Infantry
Both were designed to mount the recoilless rifle. A
engine and name change came later:
M274A2 - A5 - Truck, Platform, Utility
Used more in a utility role, but still used as
a weapons platform (RR, TOW, etc.)
When the Army mounted the TOW they added another M- #, mainly for the
mounting hardware. I can't remember what the number was. But I've heard the
whole vehicle referred to by that number. They also upgraded the vehicle
with elec. start, wide tires, fenders, and alternator. All models A3 - A5
received the upgrade. As far as I know, USMC mules did not receive the
upgrade. So if you see a USMC M274 with wide wheels and no fenders, I don't
believe it's right. There's one like this in the museum at the USS Alabama.
I've never seen any USMC mules with any evidence of a upgrade kit or seen
pictures of any.
The M274A3 was the M274 with the engine change (2AO42)
The M274A4 was the M274A1 with the engine change.
The M274 A5 was a whole new contract with aluminum replacing magnesium of
previous models.
Just wanted to clear the air.
Thanks,
Keith
