>The M37 "head of engine measures 23.5 inches". What does this refer to?
>
I believe the M37 had a 230 cu in engine, like the earlier WC series
trucks. However the original style engine block had zero meat left
between two of the cylinder pairs when taken out to the bore necessary for
a 230 (it had started off at 202 cu in for the VC or maybe even less) and
it had a tendency to blow head gaskets between these pairs and / or crack
the cylinder walls.
For the M37 they left the cubic capacity the same, but put more length in
the block to get meat between these cylinder pairs. The standard way of
differentiating between the early and late blocks is by head length which
is what he's referring to.
