I've got a very annoying problem with my CUCV starter. It's been grinding up
my ring gear. There are no shims between it and the block. I've got .005"
clearance on the teeth which means it doesn't need shims anyway. When I
replaced the first ring gear, I took the starter in to a rebuilder and had it
checked out and tested. Nothing found wrong so I reinstalled it and now
within a few months I'm wiping out another ring gear.
I recently took the truck to the starter/generator shop to have everything
checked. Again, nothing found wrong. The front mounting bracket is in place.
Tooth clearance is within spec. We replaced and torqued the mounting bolts.
He tried shimming the solenoid to delay the contact engagement. No luck. Next
visit we tried taking a 1/16" off of the arm in the starter to delay the
engagement. Still no luck. My starter drive gear is spinning before it
engages with the ring gear. Grinds at least once every other day.
I'm now in need of another ring gear replacement. Before I go through this
again I want another starter. Went back to the shop to check on replacement
24 volt starters. My choices are another direct drive Delco starter, or a
Delco gear reduction starter which started appearing on 1988 6.2's diesels
and continued to the 6.5's. Last option is a Unipoint brand gear reduction
starter but we are leery of this brand. They are manufactured in Taiwan.
Parts are supposedly not interchangeable with Delco and don't seem to be
locally available.
Has anyone else had this problem? Any advice appreciated.
