Guys, I just stumbled on an amazing thing (at least to me). I finally got
tired of putting up with a stubourn carburator on my GPW, so I dug around in
my treasure trove and came out with a replacement Carter "WO" carburator.
Looked clean and almost shinny, so I though I'd give it a try before I
attempted to rebuild the old one. Caburators scare me to death - like a
Swiss Watch with too many pieces.
Took the old one off, which happened to be a Bendix by the way, and lo, the
"new" Carter wouldn't fit back on the bolts. First thought I had some weird
manifold from a generator or something, but got to measuring against another
MB/GPW manifold and all was the same. Closer examination shows that this
particular Carter "WO" is smaller than another Carter "WO" I had (wasn't as
nice looking as the first - so didn't try to use it first). The "other" WO
fit like a champ - still needs to be rebuilt though 8-(. Anyway, the Mine Me
is about 3/4" of an inch shorter in height, the bolt spacing for the manifold
is the same, but the bolt hole is for a smaller bolt. The throat opening is
1-15/15" wide against 2-5/16 on the "other" one.
What gives?? I thought all "WO" Carter's were the same - kind of the reason
they called them "WO" in the first place. I've got three loose intake
mainfolds and the one in the jeep and the little one won't fit any of them,
but the big one will fit all.
Is this a carburator for a generator or maybe an early GP or MA?? Thanks in
advance, Tom Campbell - Birmingham, Alabama
