Thanks for all of the info about the bad voltage regulator, but I discovered
the trouble was being caused by an S.E.P. The alternator was under
warranty; therefore it was Somebody Else's Problem. The guy at the parts
store put it on a tester and surprise! It charged! I explained that once
it started charging it would charge fine, you just had to rev the engine
before it would start to charge. He warrantied it anyway and I put the new
one on and it functions properly.
I tell you this because he said they would send it back to the shop, test it
just like he did, clean it up and sell it again. So beware of "rebuilt"
alternators.
