You know, I don't see where they (the Somali refugees over here) expect
to have all these problems from, anyway. This is America. WE don't
have warlords leading violent private armies through the streets,
gunning down civilians for food, etc. That's what they left their
homelands to get away from, AND AS LONG AS THEY LEAVE THAT BEHAVIOR BACK
THERE, I fail to see the problem. My own father fought the North
Koreans, and yet I don't go out looking to attack every Korean I meet.
America fought the Viet Cong, and yet there are still many Vietnamese
who live here today in peace among us. We are a civilized nation, and
as long as they are willing to abide by the rule of law and to try their
best to fit in as new immigrants, so be it. (With the exception of
those who were fighting FOR Adid- as far as I am concerned, THEY can
both keep the "Mog" AND stay there!) But those who were their victims
and who are now refugees here are not the "enemy". Trying to deny what
happened over there is not the solution, however. That was a part of
why they left in the first place; to escape that insanity, just like a
lot of Germans, Vietnamese, etc. who were not Nazis or Communists came
here over the years.
Frankly, when I saw that movie last night, I left the theater feeling
like we should have gotten our troops out and then carpet-bombed that
entire sector into a big gravel pit, with every one of Adid's
katt-chewing, AK-toting troops underneath it. And while I still have no
love for them, I do realize that our troops weren't the only ones these
thugs killed, and their victims are the ones who fled to here- to try
and start over. So while I agree with you about your feelings towards
the ones who were fighting us, I'm not willing to apply that as a
blanket condemnation of every single Somali, or every single refugee
here. Perhaps that's not how you meant it, anyway. But it did leave me
with one definite feeling- one of pride that I helped keep the successor
to the MORON who got us into that mess in the first place out of office.
I just hope GW continues to do a better job of where and how he sends
our troops into our current global engagements. If we're going to send
in troops to do a task, then we need to support them with whatever
resources, i.e. air support, armor, etc. (mil-veh content) they need to
do the job right.
Anyway, that's my opinion of "Black Hawk Down" and the whole Somali
boycott issue. Your mileage (and beliefs) may vary.
