Seen an M1A1 slide down a hill into a Valley in Germany after attempting to
come down a road. ( NO trees stopped it) crew slightly injured.
Seen an M60 sideways due to ice on the road. The ditch stopped it.
Whenever I drove a tracked vehicle (M113, M901 Improved TOW Vehicle, M2
Bradley) I made sure we broke new ground as much as possible. By this I
mean put the right track (not in England or Australia/ Hongkong, but the
Left track there....) onto the shoulder of the road where there's loose
gravel under the snow, or dirt. Far less slippage.
(A LOT less of those white marker poles in Germany after my drivers got
through driving around there as well....)
I had to force tankers to NOT drive in the lead tanks tracks to prevent
maneuver damage while on a "Refailure - 86" (Reforger = Return of Forces to
Europe)
If the tracks followed each other in the snow, they created MUD (It was
Germany) and if they dispersed, the snow wouldn't even show the ground.
(Better for camo of movements that way too) But Tankers are diehards,
thinking that if the LEAD tank did not hit a mine, I better follow his
tracks------
Having fun, Looking for a WWI Renault myself, actually have one lead, but
can't reach the guy by phone.
Oh well, back to tracking.
