Nearby Fort Mason was the Transportation Hub at early in WWII. It is just
east of PSF, closer to Fisherman's Wharf. Early on it turned out to be
inadequate for the amount of cargo to be shipped to the Pacific and Oakland
Army Base, OARB, was constructed across the bay. For years OARB a major
Army run, common user sea-port and site of the HQ for MTMC/WA. It seved the
the nation well in WWII, Korea, VN and Desert Storm. OARB was closed down a
few years ago in one of Clinton's BRAC purges.
